Instructional Design and Educational Technology

In working on an eLearning course assignment, I happened to wonder about the definition of educational technology.  In doing so, I found several online articles that provided some useful insights into such a definition.  I also realized that it is difficult to think of educational technology without considering other related terms, particularly instructional design.  So, here are several references regarding these terms.

• Joel Gardener's post of January 13, 2012 provides a good overview of the difference and relationship between instructional design, instructional technology and instructional sciences.  His diagram regarding these three terms notes that instructional design is the "planning and creation of materials used to provide knowledge to learners", instructional technology encompasses the "tools or technologies used to aid learning", and instructional science is seen as "knowledge about instruction and learning".
• An online article from Instructional Design Central provides some useful learning system definitions, including instructional design, instructional technology, instructional systems design, educational technology, and curriculum design. In addition, the article provides a brief description of what is an instructional designer, curriculum designers, instructional technologist, and educational technologist.
• The EduTechWiki, hosted by the University of Geneva, provides a comprehensive resource kit for educational technology teaching and research.  One of the wiki pages at this site offers a comprehensive examination of instructional design, as well as instructional design as instructional technology.  This site also has a wide variety of examples of educational technology tools.
