ePortfolios: Their Place in our Company

In researching eportfolios as a tool for learning and development, I considered their place in our company and how I would use such a tool.  My notes on this topic are provided below:

1. Is a place in our company’s learning and development program?

Yes, there is a place in our learning and development area for eportfolios. For example, occupations and groups in our company that would likely benefit from an eportfolio:
  • Design technicians, engineers-in-training, managers
  • Electrician apprentices and telecommunication trainees
  • Instructional designers and trades training instructors

Employees within our firm with suitable computer skills and digital literacy, as well as access to computer systems and applications would realize the following benefits from an eportfolio:
  • Evidence to support competency-based training outcomes
  • Creation of a formal career development plan
  • Reduced reliance on single dimensional approach to assessment by exams, with greater diversity of assessment for learning and assessment that is more authentic
  • Opportunity for reflections of achievements, experience and skills gained in learning and development programs

2. What value would result from creation of my own professional eportfolio?

Given my field of work involves the integration of educational technologies for the Learning and Development business unit within our company, I could model the use of eportfolios with company-approved tools. And many of my products involve the coordination of learning tool projects, an eportfolio would be very useful in my career development as an effective way to highlight my achievements. And it would be a suitable transition from creation of my print-based portfolio to an online, digital version.

3. What information could be included in my eportfolio?

My eportfolio could include the following artifacts and attestations, which would be presented in an online website and an electronic copy as a pdf file:
