Course Evaluation - Links

In reviewing several readings regarding the effectiveness of eLearning versus face-to-face classes, I happened to veer off on to the topic of course evaluations and their effectiveness.  Here are several articles that I found to be quite informative on this topic:

• Online Course Evaluations and Response Rates (University of Saskatchewan). Summary: interesting information about response rates for online evaluations and strategies to improve those rates. Studies indicated that compared to paper-based evaluations completed in class, online evaluations tend to have significantly greater quantity and quality of open-ended comments.
• An Evaluation of Course Evaluations by Philip B. Stark, Department of Statistics, University of California, Berkeley. Summary: Stark provides an analysis of course evaluations shows that there is strong evidence that student responses to questions of “effectiveness” do not measure teaching effectiveness. He states that use of the question: "How would you rate the overall teaching effectiveness of this instructor?" with a scale of 1 to 7 does not provide meaningful information and that other ways of evaluating teaching should be combined with student comments to produce a more reliable and meaningful composite measure.

Summary: this article provides an excellent overview of the use of the Kirkpatrick Model to evaluate training programs or learning in an organization.
